The Netherlands 1940–1945

INTRODUCTION

The Persecution of the Jews in photographs

The Netherlands 1940–1945

This website provides a visual overview of the persecution of the Jews in the Netherlands during the occupation. Many photos were taken of the persecution, roundups and deportations. The press and professional photographers took photos in service of the occupier. Their photos were often used for propaganda purposes. At the same time, amateur photographers captured – often in secret – the process from isolation to extermination. Some photos did not surface until years after the war. The photos are the visual testimonies of the tragedy that left deep marks on Dutch society.
